Honey's Story
Chapter 2
surgery details

Yesterday, 10/14/99, I took Honey to see Dr. Kent Daniels at Carrollton Animal Hospital to see what we can do for her mangled leg. Little did I know exactly how mangled her leg actually is.

Ex-rays showed her femur to be completely broken and sitting at a right angle to where it should have been attached. We also discovered her pelvis is fractured in five different places. Dr. Daniels believes these breaks are about 2 months old due to the amount of scar tissue which has already developed and started calcifying.

What should have been a simple one hour surgery turned into a 3.5 hour brutal surgery. He scraped and cut and scraped and cut scar tissue away from her bone for over two hours before he could even see the bone! Once most of the scar tissue had been cut away he began the process of drilling the holes for the pin to be inserted from the top of her hip to the stifle. It took both of us to drill the pin into the bones and then get the two bone pieces lined up so the pin could connect the two pieces of the femur.

This poor little grrl has been in a lot of pain for two months as a result of getting run completely over by some jerk and left by the road to die. She also had a litter and we are guessing about the same time she got hit. She has yet to complain one time since I have had her here with me. She would get herself down the steps of my house to go outside and has even tried to play with me but she can't because she falls down. She is just the sweetest dog and so appreciative and greatful and never misses a chance to show her complete trust and appreciation by kissing and sitting right next to me.

Prognosis is good for the leg and we were given a 6 month recovery period. Once the pin comes out in 6 weeks then I will begin physical therapy with her. She is to bear now weight on the lg for 6 weeks if posible, so I carry her up and down the steps to go outside and hold her up so she can relieve herself.

In order to regain range of motion and have full use of her leg again I'll have to manipulate the leg in a bicycle motion, bend and extend the leg at the stifle and hip. This will obviously be painful and uncomfortable for her at first and I am hoping to find a heated pool so I can do water therapy with her leg to alleviate some of the initial pain after being stiff and unable to move it for 6 weeks while the bones heals.

Nothing can be done for her pelvis but time and TLC will heal the fractures as best as can be expected after such a severe injury. She may have a slight crookedness to her pelvis but it shouldn't cause any problems later down the road according to Dr. Daniels. Her leg should heal and could leave her with a slight limp but that is 100 times beter than what it was befroe her surgery.

So, Honey and I have a long road ahead of us but it will be well worth it if she is able to run and play and not be in pain the rest of her life. She has been through so much for such a young grrl and while she isn't feeling too sporty right now, she will have a new lease on life as her leg heals and she regains her mobility painfree. She can have her life back as a happy, healthy, loving giant that can run and play again!.
