Giant Schnauzer Rescue Protocol Handbook

Hi! My new name is Foster!

Dis is how I looked until my new foster friend gave me a haircut.

Ahhhhhhh, dats better, now I look like a Giant Schnauzer again!

You called my name???

Dis is me and my foster friend, Alex! She's letting me stay at her house for a couple weeks. I was happy to see her come back and get me after I went to see dat doctor guy today. He made me swallow some thick white stuff den took pix inside of me!

Foster and his little Bouvier sister (now named Lucy) were turned over to animal control after their owner died. The family was supposed to come back and get the dogs (or make arrangements) and never did so neighbors cared for them for a while. The neighbors left them at a fire station to be picked up by animal control where they spent a week in the shelter before they could be pulled. The shelter called Deb Stover with G.I.A.N.T. Rescue Network to tag the dogs so they would not be euthed if no one came to claim them.

Alex and Mark went to the shelter and pulled Foster out while I was at work on Saturday, January 24,04 since they are going to foster Foster for a couple weeks for me. I went back later that afternoon to get the little Bouvier girl for Bouvier Rescue. She is just as darlin' as Foster is as you can see by her picture! I put her fall up in a scrunchy so I could see her eyes. She's a tiny little bouv so she looks like big tedddy bear!

My new name is Lucy and I'm cute as a bug!

Foster has a medical condition that we originally thought to be mega-esophagus but we found out today that is not what it is, although the symptoms seem to be the same. The exrays showed no pouch or loose area in the esophagus so that was a giant relief! However, there is still something not right. He chokes and wheezes and gurgles when he drinks water. Its really bad and he has a terrible time and scares me to death. He is on reglan to see if that will help with motility to keep the food down and without getting into the lungs causing aspiration or aspiration pneumonia. Our hope is that the reglan will do the trick so Foster can live a relatively normal long life. Food seems to go down fine so far so this is kind of an odd thing. We're gonna see how this goes and hopefully it won't get any worse. He's THE sweetest boy who wants nothing more than to be loved on and to please.

My foster mom, Deb, gives me big bowls of ice to eat so I don't get choked when I drink!

I'm living here in Land of the Giants now with my friends Harleigh, Honey, Hannah, Sam and dat little funny looking alien dog with the long nose (10 year old rescue english cocker )named Stormy! My new foster mom hand feeds me these balls of stuff that smell so good! I get so excited I sit up on my butt and do my best tricks cause I'm such a good boy! (and I don't choke dis way)

Dis is me and dat HOney-Bunny grrrrrrrl. My mom says I am high in the rear, whatever dat means

Several months have passed and so have a couple of mis-diagnosis. We have finally determined what causes this sweet boy to aspirate when he eats and drinks. Barium exrays show aspiration in the lungs as you can see by his exray below. Foster may have a fistula in his trachea. This means there is a hole in the trachea between the trach and the esophagus so that when he eats and drinks it gets into this lungs. The white blob to the right is his stomach full of barium.

We need to send Foster to Texas A&M because they have a fluoroscope and can find the exact spot where the tear in his trachea is. He will have surgery there and have to stay there a few days. If you would like to help Foster have his surgery and care at A&M we would greatly appreciate any donations to help this sweet boy have a chance at a normal life.

We are only able to save lives as a result of the generosity of all the wonderful Rescue benefactors who so generously help many, many Giants in need each and every year.
