I don't know any details about her prior life. She was spayed and microchipped before we pulled her out of the shelter, and since then she's had her rabies shots. When she was picked up she was totally matted (see picture) and had a pretty bad bladder infection that was treated with antibiotics. Unfortunately, Jazz has heartworms and needs immiticide treatments. Our vet says that it's the #1 most common service she performs, but it still makes me nervous. I've heard it's terrible. The cost, of course, is outrageous. However, this sweet girl is totally worth it. She deserves a shot at a great life in a warm, safe, loving home. Any help we could get to offset the cost would be immensely appreciated. She starts the treatment in February. Otherwise she seems very healthy except that she is SMALL. Right now she only weighs 45 pounds. I'd say she's at least 5 pounds underweight.

Jazz is a true Louisiana girl. She likes to have fun and is sweet and affectionate. She LOVES to cuddle, and can't get enough hugs. Her foster Dad, Jason, says at times "she's like trying to hug a bowl of spaghetti." She loves to be in people's laps and is quite wiggly when she wants to snuggle. The vet at the shelter warned us that she was hyper, but I don't find her to be. She's a bit rambunctious when she's playing or excited, but most of the time she's content to lay in a chair where she can see everyone , quietly chew on a toy in her crate, or just come stand next to you for a pat on the head.

She doesn't seem to know how to play with toys, but she is learning. She likes to play with our miniature schnauzer some, and is gentle with him. She always lets him instigate playtime and otherwise leaves him alone. She's doing great in our house with our mini (male) who is 13, and our giant, Greta, who is 10. Even though the vet thinks she's about 2.5 years old, she's still very much a puppy in that she is not aware of her own body and what size she is. She occasionally accidentally steps one of the other dogs but she is coming to understand that it's not a good idea. Greta herself is food agressive and possessive of her people, so we are having to watch her and be careful, but Jazzmin has been great. Jazz is not dog-aggressive at all, but she will stand up for herself.

She is totally housebroken, and had been comfortable in her crate from day 1. She doesn't fuss about being in the crate at all. She sleeps in her crate all night and is crated whenever we are not in the room to supervise her with the other 2 canine residents of the house. She has terrible table manners in that she wants to jump when she sees that she's going to be fed, but just in the 7 days we've had her she has learned that she has to sit before her bowl is put down. She's smart! She's also already learned that we don't like being licked and slobbered on much. This isn't a house of labrador retreivers (no offense to you lab lovers out there, but I just always feel DAMP when I'm around them) lol. She still just can't seem to keep her tongue in her mouth, but now she just licks the air NEAR our faces. I'd say that's great progress in 7 days!

She is a pleasure to walk - doesn't lurch or bark at other dogs, people, kids, joggers, or kids on bikes (unlike certain OTHER giant schnauzers I know who shall remain nameless <cough>*GRETA*<cough>). She has made one trip to the dog park already. She was a bit timid at first, but quickly warmed up to the other dogs and was running and playing and had a ball. Again, no sign of aggression at all yet not totally submissive either.

She's a quiet girl. We've only heard her bark maybe 3 times. We are hoping our other two don't corrupt her. We sometimes have the "howlellujia" chorus around here. My two are LOUD. I am very hopeful that her heartworm treatments go well, of course. This is one of those many, many dogs that I can't believe was lost or abandoned. So far she seems like an ideal family pet.
I you are interested in adopting Jazzmin you will need to complete an adoption application in ordere to be considered.

If you would like to help Jazzmin with her vet bills, we accept personal checks or money orders payable to:

Please make checks out and mail to:

Sonya Pickens
1951 Tulip Street
Baton Rouge, LA 70806

Please include your email address if you send a check so Jazzmin so Sonya can thank you on Jazzmin's behalf.
